A beautiful pair of intricately carved early 19th century French Louis XIV fauteuils or armchairs handcrafted in Lyon, circa 1810s. Having large scale solid walnut frames, each chair features a straight back, gracefully curved armrests adorned with acanthus leaves terminating in stylized volute "hand knobs" with carved sunflowers, and generous rectangular seats above a carved apron with acanthus leaf, sunflower and large bellflower motifs. Raised on curved hoof feet with carved acanthus motifs joined by a carved "H" stretcher having acanthus carvings and rosettes. Needlepoint upholstery with floral brass nailhead trim has stains and is in fair condition. With a deep rich patina, this large and comfortable pair of French armchairs will make an elegant addition to the living room or library. Strong and sturdy with comfortable seating.
